An Artists' Life

The everyday life of me, an aging NH artist. I live in the woods at the top of a mountain, which was a dream when I was younger, and now is a lonely reality, hard to walk these steep hills, and few people to chat with along the way. So I grow more introspective and have begun to paint again everyday. I spend my days with Maxx and LuLu, two very interesting dogs, and my husband Stevie.

Dreams of Flying

Just about the first dreams I can remember are those of flying. I wasn't afraid once I understood I was just flying, I mean, I saw stuff flying around all the time. Leaves in the wind, birds of all sort, and my favorite, flying squirrels. They were so fun to watch leap in a flying jump from tree to tree. Apparently I thought a lot about flying because once I started these dreams, they lasted for years.

They started due to an actual attempt to fly. We lived in an old non-descript house, and it had a high porch in the front, with high bushes in front of the porch. One boring summer day, the not so bright idea occurred to me that perhaps if I jumped up and out at the same time, I could sort of fly - up and over the big hedge and well, no consideration at all after that.

I did try it. I jumped way hard, and up instead of out. And knocked myself out cold and landed in the hedge. Where I woke up in a few minutes, very sore and unable to figure out up from down. I did, and got myself out, but that is when the dreams began. At first they were scary, until I read an article in our familys' standby, 'The Readers' Digest' Magazine. In this article, a technique was described for consciously entering your dream and telling yourself - this is only a dream, and I can just relax and fly. In the case of my terrifying dream. So after that, nearly nightly, I went flying in my dreams. Until I hit high school and they get you too busy to have wonderful dreams, just homework, drivers' ed, and trying to get into college. The end of childhood occurs in high school, I would guess.
